Reception location: Valle Vista Golf Course and Conference Center – Greenwood, IN

Honeymoon location: Disney World

WHEN:

Wedding date: July 7, 2012

WHY: We chose July 7th as our wedding date because that is the same day we started dating. We married on our 3-year anniversary.

When did you first meet: We first met in college at The Ohio State University. At the time, I was a freshman and he was a senior.

Where did you first meet: We first met on the “circle”, a walking path known for love on campus.

When did you know you were going to marry him: Alex and I became instant best friends as soon as we started dating. There was nothing fake or phony about our relationship. If I was cranky, I didn’t have to hide it – I could just be me. We could tell each other anything and enjoyed being together all the time. I knew that I could spend the rest of my life with someone who really gets me.

How did he propose: The proposal was very intimate. On January 22, 2011, Alex woke up and said he wanted me to relax while he cooked me breakfast. As I sat on the couch, he came over and told me how much he loves me and wants our relationship to continue to grow and prosper, then got down on one knee and proposed. While there were no fireworks or messages written in the sky, it was Alex. He spent so much time personally designing my wedding ring that he could no longer wait to plan something outlandish for the proposal. It was the best morning ever and of course, I said “YES”.

Favorite thing to do together: We love to cook together. Our best dates include a nice, homemade dinner and a movie on the couch. We enjoy cuddling and spending quality time with one another.

THE WEDDING SCOOP

Wedding colors: Peacock blue and kiwi green (peacock themed wedding)

Number of guests: 220

Number in wedding party: 14

Wedding Style: An elegant fashion show

Beauty style: Natural

Dress style: One shoulder halter, short in the front and long in the back

Wedding cake: Our wedding cake flavors were red velvet, chocolate, and white with cream cheese icing. Taylor’s Bakery placed birds in the tiers to incorporate the peacock theme. The cake was cream with blue and green flowers to match our colors and added scripted C’s across the entire cake for our last name. We had ordered our cake so early in the wedding process that we had forgot how many gorgeous details that were incorporated and on the wedding day it was the most pleasant surprise.

Most unique wedding personalization: I made all 200 of our wedding invitations. To follow our peacock theme, we purchased peacock feathers and glued them on our handmade invitations. I also carried a picture of my grandmother who had recently passed away in my bouquet.

Something you did very different:

Instead of my father walking me down the aisle, I let my younger brother have the honor. He is the only boy in our family and I love him dearly. That was very special for me. We also had an evening wedding so that we could go straight into our reception without any waiting.

Something you did very traditional: We used unity candles as one of the traditional pieces of our wedding. We also jumped the broom to show homage to our African American and African ancestors as the traditional heritage piece of our wedding.

Something you would do all over again:

Our ceremony was exceptional. It was outside on the veranda and even though it was 107 degrees outside at 7pm, I would do it all over again and STILL have it outside on the veranda. Our guests absolutely loved it!

Something you would never do again:

At our reception, we forgot to eat! It was the worst thing we could have done. We have no record of how the food actually tasted other than the comments from our guests.

Most memorable wedding moment: The best moment, beside the pastor announcing us as husband and wife, was the moment I arrived in the horse and carriage. My guests had no idea that I would be riding in a horse and carriage so they were gasping and smiling and some even crying when they saw me pulling up to the veranda.

Best wedding decision:

The best decision we made was our venue. Valle Vista had everything!

Best wedding overall advice: While it is important to plan for your guest to have a good time at your wedding, you must also remember that it is YOUR day! Embrace every moment of it. Taste everything, dance plenty, and take every picture that your heart desires. You only get this one opportunity. Make the best of it
