Wow- in the past the Honeymoon was supposed to last for a whole month or the course of a “single moon”. Some say that the name was originally coined from a honey wine that the couple were encouraged to indulge in daily during their initial “get-to-know-each-other” period. Adding some sparkle, the German word for Honeymoon is Flitterwochen which means “glittering weeks”.
“Honey-laced” sweet concoctions have accompanied many wedding traditions over the years. Even before the official day- Polish girls bake honey cakes to lure their future groom towards a proposal. In the Arab wedding tradition, the new couple is not considered “blessed” until every guest has gorged themselves on decadent sweets like baklava and honey-filled spiked aphrodisiacs- cardamon and saffron. In Afghanistan, shirnee khoree is the word for betrothal and translates to “eating sweetness”! Ahhhh, the Honeymoon- how Sweet it is!!!!
